Frequently Asked Questions about Indoor Tanning

Q. What is the main difference between the level beds?

To put it simply, the higher the level of bed the more UVA and higher bulb wattage. This enables the rays to penetrate the skin deeper so your tan will not exfoliate off as quickly. Therefore, it will give you the longest lasting tan possible, with the lowest amount of UVB.

Q. What is the difference between UVA and UVB?

Both UVA and UVB can stimulate melanocytes to produce melanosomes which will result in a tan. However the primary role of UVA is to oxidize the melanin that is produced in your skin turning it brown. UVB primarily stimulates the production of that melanin. Both UV rays are important to the tanning process and work together to give you a golden glow.

Q. How does skin tan?

You need three key ingredients for your skin to tan; UVA, UVB, and oxygen. UV light penetrates the skin and stimulates your melanocytes (UVB’s job) causing them to produce melanosomes which contain melanin. The melanin rises towards the surface of the skin and is exposed to UV again (UVA). Then through an oxidation process the melanin will turn brown and you get a tan.

Q. Why is it important to build a base tan before warm weather/vacation?

A base tan is crucial in protecting your skin from the shock of being in a new climate. So you can enjoy your time instead of getting sun burnt or having to stay indoors!

Q. How should I determine whether to spray tan or tan in a bed?

Someone with type one skin who cannot achieve a tan out in the sun is also unlikely to be able to tan indoors. Therefore, they should use the spray tan as an alternative in getting tan in the beds.

Q. Why do I need to use FDA approved eyewear?

UV light can penetrate your eyelids and cause damage to your eyes this can lead to night blindness, color blindness, and/or cataracts. ONLY FDA approved eyewear can sufficiently protect your eyes. Cotton-balls, sunglasses, coins, towels or simply closing your eyes are not effective ways of protecting your eyes.

Q. How often should I be tanning?

Depending on the type of bed. From a minimum of once every 7-10 days in our high pressure beds to a maximum of 3-5 times per week in our level one beds depending on desired color and skin type.

Q. Why is it important I use a tanning lotion?

A tanning lotion is important for many reasons. It will help to keep your skin moisturized, dry skin reflects UV light. A tanning lotion will actually help your skin more efficiently absorb UV light. It provides your skin with key skin care ingredients, such as antioxidants and vitamins, to prevent the signs of aging. Tanning lotions also help you to get up to 40% darker and lock in the color of your tan so that it will last longer.

Q. Why should I use an “after tan” lotion?

An “after tan” lotion will help your tan to last longer. It helps to prevent your skin from exfoliating to give you long lasting results. These lotions also have ingredients that will leave your skin feeling soothed and nourished.

Q. How old do I need to be to tan?

You must be 16 years of age or older. If you are under the age of 16 your must have parental permission before you can tan. If you are 12 or under you must have a written doctors note to tan.
